Oparanozie, the Super Falcons forward, issues an apology for her penalty miss against England
Desire Oparanozie, the Super Falcons striker, has extended her apologies to Nigerians for her missed penalty kick during their Round of 16 match against England at the 2023 Women's World Cup (WWC) in Australia on Monday.
Unfortunately, the Falcons were eliminated from the WWC after a 4-2 penalty shootout loss to the Lionesses.
Nigeria's women displayed incredible determination in their match against the European champions, pushing the game into extra time and a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.
Oparanozie's penalty miss followed by Michelle Alozie's successful shot led to the Lionesses edging out the Falcons and securing a place in the quarter-finals.
In response to the defeat, Oparanozie took to her official X, previously known as Twitter, account to express her profound disappointment over the loss and, in particular, her penalty miss.
"Today is a sad day! I am deeply disappointed by our loss through penalties, and it hurts even more not to have converted mine. For this, I offer my sincerest apologies," she wrote.
Throughout the World Cup group stage, the 29-year-old was sidelined due to an injury. She was brought on late into the extra time against England and had three touches before the match proceeded to a penalty shootout.
