Messi takes on a creative role as Miami secures victory in MLS opener

Lionel Messi orchestrated both goals in Inter Miami's successful kickoff to the Major League Soccer season, securing a 2-0 triumph over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday. The Argentine World Cup winner, completing the full game, dispelled any doubts about his early-season fitness with an outstanding performance for the team considered favorites for the title by bookmakers.

"His movement was fluid, and he displayed considerable speed," commented coach Gerardo Martino on Messi's performance. Messi, who faced injuries at the end of the previous season and was also absent during part of the pre-season, looked in good form.

In front of a packed stadium, the other members of Miami's former Barcelona quartet—Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba—all started. Messi came close to scoring in the 18th minute with a curling free-kick, which was headed off the line. He later showcased his skill by chipping the ball over a player on the floor and releasing a shot. Miami took the lead when Sergio Busquets found Messi, who cleverly slipped the ball to Robert Taylor, resulting in a goal.

Despite the lead, Salt Lake's more aggressive approach in the second half caused challenges for Inter. Salt Lake had opportunities, with Cristian Arango missing a chance and Andres Gomez firing wide. However, their lack of precision cost them, and Inter Miami held on for the victory.

Recognizing the need for additional goals to secure the victory, Messi increased his work-rate and started exerting control over the game.

Dropping into a deeper position to collect the ball, Messi initiated several attacks with his swift bursts forward and demonstrated his trademark close control.

The 36-year-old maneuvered down the inside left channel to create space for a cross to the back post for Julian Gressel, but the German missed his attempt from the tight angle.

Messi then surged forward from deep, finding Suarez, who set up Diego Gomez. The Paraguayan midfielder confidently struck the ball low into the far corner, extending the lead to 2-0.

This trio almost combined for a third goal, with Messi delivering to Gomez, who then set up Suarez. However, the Uruguayan's attempt was saved by the outstretched leg of MacMath.

Martino expressed delight in seeing two of the less-heralded members of his team find the net.

"This is what should happen with a team. Normally Luis and Leo would be the ones most associated with the goal, but the fact that Robert and Diego have converted and (Messi and Suarez) have been the assistants is always a positive thing," he said.

The former Argentina, Mexico, and Barcelona coach is confident that Messi and Suarez will rekindle the magic they displayed during their seasons at the Camp Nou.

"They know each other so well, but we have to find that partnership that worked already in Barcelona," he said.

For Taylor, who enjoyed a rich spell of form immediately after Messi joined the club and was a key part of the team that won the Leagues Cup, it was a positive start to the campaign.

"We got the start we wanted. There are still things we need to work on, as it's the first game of the season. The positive thing is the three points, and we'll build on this," he said.

Inter Miami will be back in action on Sunday against Los Angeles Galaxy.
