Obasa Enforces Tight Oversight on Lagos Councils, Mandates Quarterly Project Reports
The Lagos State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, has introduced rigorous monitoring measures to oversee the activities of all 57 Local Government Area Chairman, their deputies, and councilors.
Expressing concern over the neglect of the grassroots population and the personalized use of monthly allocations, Speaker Obasa emphasized that council officials in Lagos hold four-year terms, which is unique in the country. He lamented the inadequate service delivery and urged council chairmen to focus on tangible projects and infrastructure development.
During separate meetings with council officials, Speaker Obasa directed that every quarter should witness a tangible project that demonstrates their commitment to serving the community. He criticized the lack of meaningful projects and urged council chairmen to prioritize the welfare of the people.
In a stern warning, Speaker Obasa addressed the aloofness and improper conduct of public office holders at the local government level, stressing the need for true governance and development at the grassroots. He highlighted issues such as the lack of official vehicles for councilors, absence of legislative chambers, and improper financial practices, stating that such lapses would no longer be tolerated.
He also cautioned against the concentration of power among certain council officials and emphasized the importance of collaboration with vice chairmen and councilors in decision-making processes.
The Speaker underscored the responsibility of council officials to develop their communities, reminding them of the trust and expectations placed on them by the electorate. He urged a shift towards effective governance, touching lives, and embracing progressive measures that align with the evolving world.
