Zamfara Hit by Devastating Floods: Houses Damaged, Roads Submerged
Heavy Downpour Causes Severe Destruction in Zamfara: Houses Damaged, Roads Impassable
A relentless flood has left a trail of destruction in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State. The city was engulfed by a heavy downpour on Sunday evening, resulting in significant damage to numerous houses.
The intense rain, lasting over an hour, prompted residents to evacuate their belongings from their homes. The devastating impact was felt across various areas of the State capital.
In particular, the Gengeri Megamu area witnessed extensive flooding, submerging many roads and rendering them impassable for motorists. The deluge of water created challenging conditions, severely affecting transportation in the affected areas.
Resident Expresses Concern over Damages Caused by Heavy Rainfall in Zamfara
Alhaji Malami, a resident affected by the recent flooding, described the situation as terrible, with numerous individuals suffering property losses due to the heavy rainfall. He expressed disappointment in the lack of action taken by the State government to address the recurring issue of floods in the area.
Malami pointed out that many areas in Zamfara are waterlogged, lacking properly constructed gutters to mitigate flooding. This absence of adequate infrastructure aggravates the impact of heavy rainfall, leaving residents vulnerable to property damage and other related challenges.
Resident Highlights Government and Resident Accountability in Flood Situation
In addition to criticizing the State government for its lack of proactive measures, Alhaji Malami also attributed blame to the residents for constructing houses in waterways, noting that the recurring floods have consistently wreaked havoc in the area. Urgent action, he emphasized, is required from the State government to develop effective strategies that can prevent future flooding.
Mrs. Okoye, another affected individual, shared her experience of losing personal belongings. She expressed her primary concern, which was ensuring the safety of her children during the calamity, highlighting its significance to her.
The statements made by residents underscore the need for both government and residents to take responsibility and collaborate in finding long-term solutions to mitigate the devastating impact of flooding in the area.
Lamenting the situation, she expressed, "While my husband was at work, I had to handle all the challenges on my own. If we had been together, we might have been able to salvage some of our belongings."
Engineer Mike, on the other hand, pointed out that the government has established regulations for constructing houses, but these rules are often disregarded due to corrupt practices and unethical behavior.
