Pro-Democracy Coalition Calls for Senate President Godswill Akpabio's Resignation
The Coalition for Parliamentary Democracy (CPD), a pro-democracy group and National Assembly Watch Group, has called for the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The CPD expressed its outrage over what it characterized as an unfounded impeachment plot aimed at sowing discord between senators and President Bola Tinubu. According to the group, instead of fostering cooperation between the executive and legislative branches for meaningful national development, Akpabio has created a fictitious rift between the two arms of government.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Menike Johnson, the CPD accused Akpabio of attempting to escalate tensions in the political landscape while his colleagues had cited his inability to fulfill the duties of a presiding officer and provide transparent and credible leadership as reasons for their move against him.
The CPD stated, 'As keen observers of parliamentary proceedings, we believe Akpabio should address the concerns raised by his fellow senators, including allegations of a lack of transparency, violations of established parliamentary procedures, conventions, and financial improprieties within the Senate. His alleged favoritism in Senate management also raises questions.'
The group went on to emphasize that the attempt to shift blame onto external parties does not address the fundamental issue of leadership failure raised by the senators against the embattled Senate president. Given that he has lost the support of his colleagues and has failed to address the serious leadership concerns, the CPD urged Akpabio to step down as Senate president.
The CPD warned that Nigeria cannot afford a Senate plagued by unstable leadership that does not command the loyalty of its members, especially during these critical times for the nation.
