Employees demonstrate against economic challenges in Zamfara

The Zamfara State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress has joined the nationwide demonstration against the economic challenges resulting from the removal of the fuel subsidy.

On Tuesday, protesters took to the streets and marched to the office of the State's Head of Service, Barrister Ahmed Liman. Addressing the demonstrators at Liman's office, Sani Haliru, the chairman of the state chapter of the NLC, emphasized that the protest was not only for the workers but for the entire population of the country.

"The alarming rise in hunger, starvation, and overall suffering has become so concerning and intolerable that the labor force has no choice but to engage in a protest," Haliru expressed.

He mentioned that numerous meetings between the Labor and the federal government have taken place, yet none have yielded any positive outcomes.

He additionally praised the state government for settling the outstanding three months' salaries of workers and pensioners, despite inheriting such liabilities from the previous administration in the state.

Meanwhile, Liman commended the peaceful protests carried out by the labor force across the state. He assured them that he would convey their message to the state governor, Dauda Lawal, for the necessary actions to be taken.

The NLC is demonstrating against the government's purported failure to enact agreements reached between the parties on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

This decision came after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government, demanding the implementation of measures to alleviate the widespread hardship in the country.
