Dismissed corporal impersonating inspector arrested by Lagos police
Lagos State police apprehend discharged corporal accused of posing as an active Inspector of Police.
As per SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson, law enforcement officers successfully apprehended the individual on June 4th at the Gaskiya College Road Junction in Ijora-Badiya, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
Hundeyin revealed that initial investigations revealed the suspect had been utilizing police uniforms ever since his termination from the force in 2017.
He further explained that the 35-year-old individual, a resident of Sango Ota in Ogun, was apprehended while operating an unregistered motorcycle.
Hundeyin added that a police team engaged in stop-and-search duties stopped the suspect and proceeded to question him regarding his presence on a major road, which was in violation of the ban on such activities.
"The suspect identified himself as a Police Inspector and presented a police identification card featuring his name, photograph, and designation as an Inspector of Police," Hundeyin said.
As part of the investigation, the police obtained a court order to search the suspect's residence in Sango Ota, and the search was conducted on June 8th.
During the search, several items were discovered, including a set of uniforms displaying the rank of Sergeant, an operational jacket labeled 'SARS LAS SCORPION,' a pair of camouflage pants denoting the rank of Inspector, and a jacket with the inscription 'Special Forces.'
Additional items recovered from the suspect included a police belt, a pair of police boots, a camouflage tee-shirt, a police beret with a crest, and an unsewn blue uniform.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect would change his rank to match the promotion of his serving colleagues within the police force.
Hundeyin confirmed that once the investigation is concluded, the suspect will be brought before the court for arraignment.
