Alarming Report: Benue Tops List as 1.6 Million Nigerians Trapped in Modern Slavery, Human Trafficki
It's disheartening to learn that Benue State has been identified as Nigeria's focal point for human trafficking between 2021 and 2022, with several other states following closely in these ignominious rankings. The Director-General of NAPTIP, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, revealed this information during the annual colloquium of the Epiphany Azinge Foundation in Abuja.
The key issues raised, including the reduction in the number of victims from Edo State, the high number of convictions in 2022, and the alarming statistics from the Global Slavery Index, highlight the urgent need for collective efforts to combat modern-day slavery. It is crucial to address the root causes, prosecute perpetrators, and provide support for victims.
The voices of experts and advocates, including the Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Executive Secretary of NHRC, Anthony Ojukwu (SAN), and Prof. Bolaji Owasonye, emphasize the gravity of the situation and the importance of concerted efforts to eradicate modern-day slavery in Nigeria.
The commitment of organizations and individuals, such as the Epiphany Azinge Foundation, to raise awareness and work towards ending this pervasive issue is commendable. It serves as a reminder that the fight against modern-day slavery requires a comprehensive and collaborative approach from all sectors of society.
