Former Dutch international, Promes, was mandated to cover expenses for stabbing cousin

On Tuesday, a Dutch court ruled that Quincy Promes, the former Ajax and Netherlands international winger, must compensate his cousin for stabbing him in the leg in 2020. The 32-year-old, currently playing for Spartak Moscow, had previously been sentenced to 18 months in jail for the assault, which occurred during a birthday party dispute over a stolen necklace.

The specific compensation amount will be determined and disclosed at a later date. Although the cousin's legal representatives initially sought approximately one million euros ($1.1 million), the final sum is expected to be less.

Promes, who has consistently denied charges and appealed at each legal stage, has not made a court appearance, and efforts to extradite him from Russia have proven unsuccessful. Despite uncertainties surrounding his willingness to comply, authorities have seized a villa that Promes purchased during his time with Ajax.

The investigation into the stabbing originated from intercepted wiretaps related to a separate case involving Promes and drug smuggling. In May, the winger was charged with importing several hundred kilograms of cocaine through the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2020. Prosecutors are seeking a nine-year jail sentence in that case, with the verdict scheduled for February 14.

Promes, who earned 50 caps and scored seven goals, was part of the national team at the Euro 2020 championships, held in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, he has not represented the national team since then. After joining Ajax in 2019 from Sevilla in a 15-million-euro transfer, he returned to Spartak in 2021.
