FG combats energy poverty with nation compact initiative

The Federal Government has committed to tackling energy poverty by organizing a high-level stakeholder forum aimed at executing the National Energy Compact under the Mission 300 initiative.

Scheduled for July 8, 2025, the forum will be organized by the Federal Ministries of Power and Finance in partnership with Sustainable Energy for All, marking a crucial advancement in expanding energy access across the country.

Referred to as Mission 300, the initiative is led by the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank, receiving considerable support from The Rockefeller Foundation, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL).

The goal is to provide electricity to 300 million people throughout Africa by 2030, with Nigeria included among the twelve countries chosen for the initial phase. In line with this commitment, Nigeria has vowed to implement significant reforms to enhance energy access, boost renewable energy, and draw in private sector investment.

To facilitate this initiative, the Federal Government has established a high-level Compact Delivery and Monitoring Unit to manage and coordinate the achievement of the Mission 300 objectives.

Through the Stakeholder Forum, this unit will bring together senior government officials, development partners, and leaders from the private sector to promote coordinated actions, attract investment, and emphasize advancements on Nigeria’s National Energy Compact, which was introduced at the Dar es Salaam Energy Summit in January 2025.

The compact sets forth explicit, investable goals: increasing the annual growth rate of electricity access from 4 to 9 percent and enhancing access to clean cooking solutions from 22 to 25 percent annually.
