Arsenal sign Valencia defender Mosquera in £13m deal

Arsenal announced on Thursday that they have signed defender Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia, bringing their total expenditure for the summer transfer window to nearly £140 million ($189 million).

The Spain under-21 international arrives for an initial fee of approximately £13 million, along with additional performance-related bonuses, and is believed to have secured a five-year contract with an option for another year.

At just 21 years old, Mosquera is Arsenal's fifth signing in recent weeks and is expected to provide support for William Saliba and Gabriel in the central defense, while also being capable of playing across the back line.

Having made 41 appearances for Valencia last season, Mosquera has joined Arsenal for their upcoming tour in Singapore and Hong Kong.

“It means so much to me,” he stated on the club's website. “There has been a lot of effort that has gone into this.

“When this opportunity arose, I knew I had to seize it. I’m joining a historic and enormous club. Arriving here with my family, you can truly feel the significance of this place.”

Manager Mikel Arteta praised Mosquera as “an intelligent athlete with good pace, who can play centrally and on either side.”

Mosquera follows the signings of Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, and Noni Madueke to the Emirates.

Additionally, Gabriel and Myles Lewis-Skelly have signed new contracts during the off-season, while a long-term extension for teenager Ethan Nwaneri is believed to be nearly finalized.

Arsenal is still optimistic about securing striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, although a deal worth up to £65 million is not expected to happen immediately.

The Gunners, who have finished as Premier League runners-up three consecutive times, will kick off their 2025/26 season at Manchester United on August 17.
