Allegri vows to restore AC Milan, bets on Modric

Massimiliano Allegri promised on Monday to revive AC Milan’s past greatness as he returns to manage the struggling Italian club for a second time.

The Rossoneri turned to the accomplished Allegri after the club experienced its worst league finish in ten years, resulting in the dismissal of Sergio Conceicao after five challenging months at the helm.

“The aim for this season is to qualify for the Champions League, as a club like AC Milan must compete in Europe,” Allegri stated to reporters in Singapore, where his squad will take on Arsenal in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

“This is my sole objective from the very beginning. These are the matches that energize the team. We’re not focused on the past; instead, we are eager for the future,” the 57-year-old Italian added.

Milan concluded the 2024–25 season in eighth place — missing the chance for European competition — and fell short in the Coppa Italia final against Bologna.

As a result, Allegri was appointed to succeed Conceicao, having previously managed the club from 2010 to 2014.

Allegri secured the Scudetto in his inaugural season with Milan — the club’s first title since 2004 — before enjoying a successful period at Juventus, where he won five consecutive Serie A championships.

“It has been over ten years since I last managed Milan. The circumstances have certainly changed now. Much has evolved, not only in Milan but also in the realm of football,” he said.

“However, the overarching goal remains unchanged, which is to bring this club back to its rightful place, that being the Champions League,” Allegri continued.

He expressed confidence that the recent acquisition of Luka Modric from Real Madrid will help restore Milan’s reputation among Europe’s top teams, where they hold the title of seven-time European champions.

At 39, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner still possesses a lot to give, and Allegri will rely on his extensive experience and leadership to motivate the squad.

“Modric is an established champion who requires no introduction. He exemplifies discipline and technical skill,” Allegri remarked.
