Umahi Lists Roads To Be Reconstructed With N217 Billion

Nigeria's Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced that the ministry has engaged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the imperative to reconstruct deteriorating roads nationwide. Umahi revealed that a proposal has been put forth for the reconstruction of 260 roads and eight bridges across the country, involving a total budget of N217 billion. The minister disclosed this during the inauguration of four road project committees in Abuja on Thursday.

Umahi emphasized that the committees were established by the ministry to oversee the maintenance of roads and ensure contractors adhere to the signed contracts. He highlighted specific projects, including the reconstruction of the Benin-Warri Dual Carriageway and the dualization of the East-West Road Section III in Rivers. The minister explained that the task force, located in these areas, would efficiently supervise the projects, allowing for necessary redesigns based on site conditions.

Addressing the need for flexibility, Umahi mentioned the ministry's authority to redefine projects, citing article two of the contract under section 51 of the General Conditions. He expressed the intention to use one-foot thick concrete for road reconstruction to enhance durability.

Umahi also shared that the Federal Government, in collaboration with President Tinubu, has prioritized key roads, particularly those between Benin and Warri and the road connecting Eleme and Onne Port. He revealed that the ministry presented a list of 260 projects to President Tinubu, totaling N217 billion, and that the President has directed its submission to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for discussions.

Highlighting the significance of the road projects for national development, Umahi noted their impact on commerce, education, security, and power. He further mentioned the President's approval of funds for the rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos and expressed concerns about the failures on the East-West Road, emphasizing the need for urgent reconstruction to prevent potential collapses.
