President Tinubu directs Edun to present new minimum wage template in two days

President Bola Tinubu has asked Wale Edun, Minister of Finance, to provide the fiscal implications of a new minimum wage within two days. Tinubu issued the order at a meeting with the government negotiation team led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the presidential palace in Abuja. Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, said this in an interview with journalists following the closed-door meeting on Tuesday. Idris stated that the President met with Federal Government representatives as part of the minimum wage negotiations with labor.

He stated, "The president has just summoned a meeting of all those who negotiated on behalf of the federal government led by the secretary to the government of the federation, the minister of finance was there, the minister of budget planning, the minister of information, the minister of budget and national planning, the minister of labour, and the NNPCL GMD."We were all there to look at all of the concerns, and the president has asked the minister of finance to run the numbers and report back to him between today and tomorrow so that we may have statistics ready for negotiations with labor." Idris indicated that the president was willing to accept the committee's resolutions, stating that "

The government is not opposed to labor debates, nor is it opposed to pay increases; but, the government is always present to guarantee that there is a balance between what the government says and what the realities are on the ground. "As a result, we will work tirelessly to guarantee that any promises made by the government are fulfilled. That is the purpose of this gathering.

Furthermore, he stated that President Tinubu had urged government officials to collaborate with the organised private sector and sub-nationals to establish a new affordable salary award for Nigerians. Idris explained, "The President has issued a matching order requiring all those who have negotiated on behalf of the federal government, as well as representatives of organized private sectors and subnationals, to work together to create a new wage award that is affordable, sustainable, and realistic for Nigerians.

As I previously stated, the wage award is not limited to the federal government; sub-nationals and the organized private sector are also participating; labour stepped out during that procedure. Now we have returned to the negotiating table." The minister promised that all hands will be on deck to provide a new minimum wage to Nigerians in one week. "All of us will work together assiduously within the next one week to ensure that we have a new wage for Nigeria that is acceptable, sustainable and also realistic," Idris stated.
