Mother Abandons and Drowns One-Year-Old Son in Delta Well
A 24-year-old woman, Sophia Nkwor, has reportedly abandoned and drowned her one-year-old son in a well in the Araya community, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State.
Sophia Nkwor was paraded along with other crime suspects by the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abaniwonda Olufemi, at the State Command's headquarters in Asaba on Thursday.
Olufemi stated, “On April 28, 2024, a case of infanticide was reported at Oleh Division. A suspect named Sophia Nkwor, a 24-year-old female from Isoko South LGA, allegedly dumped her one-year-and-one-month-old child in a well along the road in the Araya community, Isoko South LGA.
"Children playing near the well discovered the abandoned child floating in the water."
He said the child's mother was immediately arrested, and she confessed to having dumped the child on April 26, 2024. Further investigation is underway.
Sophia Nkwor explained that she decided to end her child's life because she couldn't support him financially.
She identified her son as Destiny, stating that his father had rejected him, and she was living with her grandmother in the community.
"I had no one to help me; I was the only one taking care of the child. It was all on me, and I was overwhelmed," she said, adding that she was in a bad state of mind when she committed the infanticide.
