According to the statement, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, announced this while discussing actions made to manage the outbreak in Lagos State.
"He revealed that 350 suspected cases of cholera were reported in 29 wards across multiple LGAs in Lagos State with 17 confirmed cases and 15 fatalities so far," the statement began.
The commissioner was cited as saying, "The laboratory investigation and test results have confirmed Cholera sub-type O-1." This subtype is connected with a more serious illness. The number of new cases per day varies by LGA, according to our constant surveillance and monitoring updates.
"Although this is an increase from the numbers published three days ago, cases are now dramatically subsiding in previously affected LGAs as a result of our interventions and surveillance efforts; however, we are recording some new cases in previously unaffected LGAs, highlighting the importance of residents strictly adhering to precautionary, personal, and environmental hygiene measures.
He continued, "The Directorate of Environmental Health of the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency of the Ministry of Environment, have collected samples of water sources, food, and beverage samples in all affected LGAs, while facility inspections are ongoing.
"We are prepositioning cholera kits in health facilities around the state. Our attempts to contain the outbreak also include the distribution of oral rehydration solutions and public health education programmes."
Abayomi stated that a high-level team from the Lagos State Government Ministry of Health had just concluded a meeting with Dr. Jide Idris, Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, and his team, as well as World Health Organisation partners, to ensure that all interventions are optimised.
Abayomi asked locals to help the state government combat cholera by carefully following preventative measures, working with health officials, and participating in community-wide cleanliness initiatives, especially as the Sallah celebration approaches.
"During the Ileya celebration season, inhabitants are recommended to consume clean water, properly cook meals, practice personal hygiene, wash their hands frequently, use sanitizer, and avoid overcrowded areas.
"Immediate reporting of symptoms such as watery diarrhoea or vomiting is also critical in order to save lives and avoid transmission to other members of the community.
"Treatment for suspected cholera is provided free of charge at all government facilities as part of government standard public health response," he stated.
The commissioner continued, "We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide regular updates." Residents are encouraged to be informed and follow public health warnings to ensure their safety and well-being during this time."
