Ikpeazu affirms his commitment to remain in the PDP
Former Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, clarified that the decision of some of his former aides to join other political parties is a personal choice. He emphasized his commitment to remaining in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and working alongside others to rebuild it. Speaking at the party's caucus meeting in Umuahia on Thursday, Ikpeazu urged unity among party members in the state to ensure a resurgence in electoral success.
He emphasized, "Each of us must own our performance in the upcoming 2023 elections, even as our party undergoes internal reforms. I am steadfast in my commitment to the PDP and fully dedicated to its reconstruction."
"Some may choose to depart, regardless of our efforts, but loyalty also entails recognizing that, at some juncture, this party has been beneficial to you."
"It is time for sacrifice, particularly from those who have previously benefited from our party's support in various ways, as we must all collaborate to reposition it."
Earlier in his speech, the state PDP chairman, Asiforo Okere, expressed gratitude to members who have remained steadfast in supporting the party, especially post-2023 elections, and reminded them of the party's majority in the state House of Assembly.
Okere also announced that the National Working Committee has granted a three-month extension to elected ward executives, appointing them in an acting capacity, and formed three committees to handle peace and reconciliation, chart the way forward, and manage finances.
Last week, six former aides of Ikpeazu, along with their supporters, defected to the All Progressives Congress ahead of a zonal caucus meeting of the party.
