Hospital in Enugu State Forced to Close as Workers Protest Seven Months of Unpaid Salaries

On Wednesday, Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUT) experienced a protest as its workers expressed their dissatisfaction with the Enugu State government's failure to pay seven months' worth of salary arrears. The affected employees, including nurses, cleaners, and security guards, were reportedly hired during the previous administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

During the protest, the workers, who had halted all hospital activities, marched through various departments carrying placards and chanting labor songs. According to one of the workers affected, they haven't received their salaries since February. Expressing their frustration, the worker stated, “We have reached out to the state government and appealed to the hospital management to pay our wages, but our efforts have been in vain. Today, we took to the streets to make our voices heard globally."

The worker further criticized the government for withholding wages for seven months while the workers continued to fulfill their duties. He emphasized, “It is extremely heartless for the government to delay workers' wages for such an extended period, especially when we continue to show up for work every day. There's no valid justification for withholding our monthly salaries."

In their plea, the disgruntled workers appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to address their concerns and ensure the prompt payment of their salaries.
