Flights threatened as Nigerian aviation unions join strike

The aviation unions have decided to participate in organized labor's indefinite strike, which begins tomorrow. The aviation unions, who at first claimed not to have received a mandate from the Trade Union Congress, to which they are associated, have now instructed their members to cease operations at all Nigerian airports. The unions made their decision, the  NigerianWatch learned, during an emergency meeting on Sunday. The unions said that the withdrawal would become effective at midnight on Monday, June 3.

The National Union of Air Transport Employees, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers are among the unions. Relevant News Legislators, TUC, NLC, and FG meet to resolve the minimum wage crisis. NANS supports NLC and implores FG to accede to labor's demands. Maritime employees promise to go on a national strike on Monday. All branches were instructed to comply by a joint statement from Comrade Ocheme Aba, General Secretary NUATE; Comrade Frances Akinjole, Deputy General Secretary ATSSSAN; Comrade Abdul Rasaq Saidu, Secretary General ANAP; and Comrade Olayinka Abioye, General Secretary NAAPE.

The statement said, "We hereby notify the general public, aviation service providers, airline operators, aviation businesses, and all aviation workers nationwide that starting at 0000hrs on June 3, 2024, all services at all Nigerian airports shall be fully withdrawn until further notice. This is in compliance with the directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria."

"The strike action will begin at international terminals on June 4, 2024, as we are aware that many international flights to Nigeria are already in the air." "Every aviation worker should understand the gravity of this conflict and give their full cooperation. At every airport, all branch officers of our unions are required to guarantee complete compliance.
