FG scales up affordable housing plan with new cities
The Federal Government has unveiled plans to create Renewed Hope Cities in four more geopolitical zones and extend its Renewed Hope Estates initiative to an additional 24 states, as part of its ongoing mission to enhance access to affordable housing throughout Nigeria.During an inspection of the 2,000-unit Renewed Hope City project in Kano on Friday, July 25, 2025, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed the expansion.
The information was made public in a statement on the ministry's website.
The minister noted that the new Cities will be located in the North Central, South South, North East, and South East zones, supplementing existing projects in Kano, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory, which are at advanced development stages.
In addition to the City projects, the government is building 250-unit Renewed Hope Estates in 12 states across all six geopolitical zones. This initiative will be expanded to include 24 more states in the next phase under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's housing program.
“The federal government, via the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, is currently developing 250-unit Renewed Hope Estates in 12 states across the country's six geopolitical zones as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme.
“Plans are also being finalized to commence construction of the same project in an additional 24 states to ensure affordable housing is accessible to Nigerians.
“Additionally, the government is constructing seven Renewed Hope Cities, one in each geopolitical zone and the Federal Capital Territory, with the cities in Kano, Lagos, and FCT in advanced stages, while construction in the remaining four zones—north east, north central, south south, and south east—is forthcoming,” the statement indicated in part.
Dangiwa also set an August 2025 target for the completion of the 2,000-unit Renewed Hope City in Kano.
Earlier this week, he mentioned that the 3,112-unit Karsana Renewed Hope City in Abuja is on track for completion within the same period, although its official inauguration might be postponed due to ongoing infrastructure developments.
The minister reassured contractors involved in the Renewed Hope housing projects that all pending payments would be made “as soon as practicable,” encouraging them to stay committed despite the current delays.
The Renewed Hope Housing Programme encompasses two main components.
The first, Renewed Hope Cities, consists of large-scale residential developments intended for each of the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory.
These projects are executed through a public-private partnership model, where private developers take charge of financing, land acquisition, and infrastructure development—often funded through high-interest loans.
This financial framework tends to increase the final selling prices of the housing units.
