Senator Eteng Jones Light Up CRS Central Rally For Governor Bassey Otu

The thriving business town of Ikom was abuzz yesterday, Saturday, May 10, 2025. Elders, leaders, and political players from the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State gathered in town under the auspices of the Central Progressives Initiative (CPI) to renew their support for His Excellency, Senator Bassey Otu, Governor of Cross River State. It was also an opportunity to formally support the Governor for a second term in office. The who's who of the Central Senatorial District was in attendance.

The lineup was amazing. His Excellency, Chief Clement Ebri (former Governor of Cross River State), Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem (Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly), Senator Eteng Williams (serving senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District), Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (former Senate Leader of the 7th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria), Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba, Rt. Hon. Alex Egbona, and Hon. Victor Abang (all serving members of the Federal House of Representatives)

During the event, one man accidentally stole the show. Senator Eteng Williams, who had to cut short his official visit to the United States to attend the Offshore Technology Conference in order to be physically present at this event, was taken aback by the massive turnout of his enthusiastic constituents from Abi, Yakurr, Obubra, Etung, Ikom, and Boki Local Government Areas who packed the Ikom Township Stadium. Just as he believed he could make a discreet entrance into the location after arriving from Abuja that morning, he was "ambushed" by the people of Central Cross River, who were dressed in T-shirts and face caps and holding banners and posters with his and Governor Bassey Otu's photos. It was a demonstration of organic support. It confirmed the public's trust in the Senator's ability to represent them.

In fact, when Sen. Eteng was asked to move the resolution to endorse His Excellency, Governor Otu for a second term, it was a Herculean struggle for event authorities and security officers to keep the mob under control, which insisted on escorting him to the stage. In a political period where politicians pay for rented crowds to convey their public appeal, Senator Williams' appearance at the Central Progressives Initiative demonstration demonstrated that when you work for the people, they will appreciate you back.

More than 70% of those who attended the event did so to demonstrate solidarity with Senator Eteng Williams, as seen by the distinctive appearance of his followers. Following the ceremony, a clearly elated Senator Williams told the media, "I am overwhelmed by this huge display of support for our wonderful Governor and my humble self. Days like today serve as a barometer to assess how far we have been able to achieve the developmental ambitions of our people.

Today both encourages and challenges me to do more for the people of Central Cross River State. And I will do so in close cooperation and support of His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, our beloved leader and Governor. That is my solemn pledge to the public. Senator Williams appears to be enjoying high approval ratings. While he has pledged to maintain his usual simplicity and humility, the people of the Central Senatorial District should expect more benefits from his representation.

Central is doing well. And Central has no intention of altering a working Senator anytime soon. Sonny Ovai is a public affairs analyst who writes from Ikom, Cross River State.
