Udeze asserts that the Eagles do not have the squad to secure victory in the AFCON
Former Nigerian defender Ifeanyi Udeze cast doubt on the Super Eagles' ability to win the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
While acknowledging the potential within the squad, Udeze emphasized the absence of a unified team structure crucial for success.
“The AFCON is a wide-open competition. The Super Eagles have initiated their campaign with 'let’s do it again,' and I believe they can. We have the players capable of achieving that, but presently, there's a lack of team cohesion. The coach needs to integrate these players to form a united team. Currently, we have talented individuals, but they haven't formed a cohesive unit,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Udeze called on the Nigerian Football Federation to fulfill its duties by ensuring the prompt payment of match bonuses for both players and coaching staff.
While harboring concerns about the team's overall organization, Udeze displayed confidence in the squad's attacking capabilities, stating, “Our strikers are performing admirably in Europe, and I believe our attack will pose a significant threat in this AFCON.
"It's an attacking force that all teams should be wary of. I'm confident that our attack will be a formidable threat, so I won't pinpoint any individual as our primary strength, but I'm certain we have the attacking prowess to unsettle any team and secure positive outcomes.”
Jose Peseiro's team clinched their AFCON qualification convincingly by defeating São Tomé and Príncipe 6-0 in the final match of the qualifiers, securing the top spot in Group A.
The Super Eagles will undergo preparations in Saudi Arabia before proceeding to Ivory Coast for the tournament, aspiring to provide Nigerian fans with a cause for celebration.
