Supporters call on the Super Eagles to elevate their performance in the AFCON Round of 16
Football enthusiasts in Bauchi are urging the Super Eagles to enhance their performance as they progress to the round of 16 in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the Super Eagles secured a victory over Guinea Bissau with a solitary goal on Monday at the Stade Felix Houphouet Boigny in Abidjan.
The triumph secured the Eagles' qualification for the round of 16 in the tournament.
Encouraging the Eagles to enhance their overall performance for advancement from the round of 16 to the quarterfinals, Mr. Umar Saidu, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Bauchi Council, found the match between Eagles and Guinea entertaining.
“It was a good match; we thank God that we qualified for the next knockout stages, but we missed a lot of scoring chances.
Also, the aggressiveness of the players in trying to score was lacking; they need to improve if we really want to zoom into the quarterfinal.
Considering that there are no minnow countries now in football, as the so-called big teams were shocked in this Nations Cup,” Saidu said.
Another enthusiastic commentator, Mr. Ishola Michael, commended the Super Eagles for winning the match against Guinea Bissau.
“Though the Super Eagles won the match, it was not impressive enough; the attack was not sharp enough, but the midfield and defense rose to the occasion.
To advance to the next stage of the tournament, improvements must be made in the attack. The Super Eagles won by luck," he stated.
Mr. Nasiru Ibrahim, another sports analyst, commended the Eagles' performance in defeating Guinea-Bissau 1-0.
“Although the game was good, it was not as engaging as the second game against Ivory Coast.
Nigeria lost a lot of opportunities, so the coach needs to work on how the midfielder can find Oshimen,” he remarked.
