Italian and Goan Carlo confesses that their love for Nigeria blossomed due to Osimhen.
Goan Carlo has disclosed that the adoration for Nigeria
among himself and fellow Italians stems primarily from Napoli's emerging star,
Victor Osimhen.
During one of his visits to Naples, Italy, the renowned
German-based Nigerian sports journalist/reporter Omavua Akatugba had an
interesting encounter with an Italian driver named Carlo. As Akatugba was
leaving Napoli, he hopped into a taxi headed for the airport. Curious about
Akatugba's background and purpose in Naples, Carlo inquired about his
nationality and reason for being in the city.
Akatugba proudly revealed that he was from Nigeria and
working as a sports journalist, covering a Napoli game because of his fellow
Nigerian, Osimhen. To Akatugba's surprise, this simple mention of Osimhen
ignited an enthusiastic outpouring of admiration from Carlo, turning their taxi
ride into a joyful and laughter-filled journey.
Carlo expressed, "We fell in love with Nigeria because
of Osimhen. We've been waiting for a player as exceptional as Maradona for 33
years, and now we have one. We adore Osimhen, we truly do."
Carlo passionately emphasized Osimhen's hero status in
Napoli, highlighting his impactful presence on the field with his strength and
fierce determination. "Yes, yes, he is a hero in Napoli, you know, because
of how he performs during our matches. The intensity and passion he brings to
the game are of immense importance to us," Carlo enthusiastically stated
as he drove Akatugba.
Carlo further revealed, "We can accept defeat in a
match, but the energy Osimhen exudes on the field means everything to us. He
serves as a bridge connecting two nations." Acknowledging the significant
investment made in Osimhen, who was acquired for over €70 million three years
ago, it is evident that he will become the most expensive African footballer in
history when he eventually departs Napoli.
The 24-year-old striker has been in exceptional form, having
scored 23 goals in 29 league games during the 2022/23 season. Notably, his goal
played a crucial role in securing Napoli's first Serie A title in 33 years.
