Athletes from Bayelsa State stand out at the National Athletics Trials in Asaba
Bayelsa State athletes have achieved significant victories in the sprints at the ongoing Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN)/MOC National Trials in Asaba, Delta State.
In the Junior Boys 100m, Tejiri Godwin of Team Bayelsa secured the top spot, clocking 11.04s (-2.2) to outpace Precious Aina, who claimed 2nd position with a time of 11.09s. Michael David, another Bayelsa athlete, took 3rd place in 11.20s.
Perezide Sigah, a 15-year-old from Ekowei, clinched victory in the youth category 100m, finishing in 12.51s. Lucy Nwankwo, the National Youth Games Champion, secured 2nd place with a new personal best of 12.66s, and Olatundun Muhammed-Raji came in 3rd at 12.72s.
In the Long Jump Junior, Opinion Ebitimi Precious claimed the male category title with a jump of 7.35 meters.
In the 400m Junior, Goodluck Johnbull secured 3rd position in the group A final.
Dr. Kola Oredipe, the Vice-Chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association, expressed optimism about Bayelsa's resurgence as an athletics powerhouse in Nigeria during the National Athletics trials in Asaba.
Oredipe, present in Asaba to inspire the athletes, emphasized that the state government's investments in track and field events were bearing fruit. He asserted, "The coaches are dedicated to generating more champions, following in the footsteps of Linda Eseimokumoh, Gloria Kemasuode, Tima Godbless, and Victory Godah."
"Observe Pere, a 15-year-old, already shining on the track. She possesses immense potential. Under the chairmanship of Godwin Oghogho, the Association is currently on the right track. We are delighted with our athletes' performance in this national trial. We remain committed to supporting their training, welfare, and creating additional opportunities for them to compete."
