Tinubu's Signing of Law Grants Access to Educational Loans for Underprivileged Students
President Bola Tinubu fulfills promise by signing Students Loan Bill into law, advancing education funding liberalization in the country.
Yesterday evening, President Bola Tinubu's media team, led by Dele Alake, who is also a member of the Presidential Strategic Team, revealed to journalists that the new law was signed.
The team, accompanied by other members including Tunde Rahman and Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, as well as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, David Adejoh, explained that the law represents the fulfillment of Tinubu's electoral commitment.
Addressing concerns about the law potentially leading to inflation in school fees, he clarified that the two situations are unrelated. Emphasizing the objective of the law, he explained that it aims to facilitate access to education for underprivileged students in the country.
He stated, "We are delighted to inform you that just a few moments ago, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Students Loan Bill into law. As you are aware, this law carries significant implications and benefits."
"This is a promise that was made during the presidential campaign by the candidate at the time, vowing to prioritize the student loan issue. Today, that promise has been fulfilled.
"The bill has been signed into law, opening up avenues for our underprivileged students to access federal government loans to support their educational pursuits and careers. This aligns with the practices followed in developed countries across the globe."
Sunday Asefon, the former President of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), hailed the development as a blessing that would offer opportunities to orphans and underprivileged students.
He expressed that the newly passed bill presents this group of individuals with the chance to obtain loans and pursue their educational aspirations.
Asefon noted that this progress demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to aligning with other countries that have already implemented similar initiatives, indicating the nation's efforts to achieve parity in this regard.
"We observed it in his manifesto, but we never anticipated it would materialize so quickly. The President has not even spent a month in office, yet he has brought joy to Nigerian students. The students, their parents, and student leaders are grateful for this action. This bill will have far-reaching effects," he expressed.
Furthermore, Anderson Ezeibe, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, mentioned that the union would need to carefully examine the bill before providing any comments.
"It would be premature to discuss it until our team thoroughly analyzes it. Once we have done that, we will be able to release a statement regarding it."
