Senate Urges NUC to Prioritize Accommodation for Female Students in Response to Abduction Concerns

The Senate, in a recent development, has urged both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Federal Ministry of Education to prioritize the provision of campus accommodation for female students as a precautionary measure against potential abductions.

This decision, made on Thursday, is part of a broader initiative aimed at expressing solidarity with Nigerian women during the Sixteen Days of Advocacy for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

In addition to addressing accommodation needs, the legislators have directed their focus towards the Nigeria Police Force, stressing the importance of strengthening the prosecution process for individuals involved in gender-based violence. The goal is to establish a robust legal framework that ensures the conviction of perpetrators and acts as a deterrent.

Furthermore, the Senate has called upon the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to continually review existing policies and laws related to gender-based violence. This initiative aims to incorporate and effectively implement best practices and strategies, ultimately contributing to a safer environment for women nationwide.
