Pope advocates for the prohibition of surrogacy

Pope Francis has called for a worldwide prohibition on surrogacy, condemning the practice of a woman carrying another person's child as "deplorable." In his New Year's address to diplomats at the Vatican, the pontiff described surrogacy as a "grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child." Emphasizing the importance of respecting life on the path to peace, the 87-year-old pope urged a halt to conflicts globally.

The pope emphasized that life, starting from the unborn child in the mother's womb, should not be suppressed or commodified. He expressed strong disapproval of surrogate motherhood, considering it a serious infringement on the dignity of both the woman and the child. The pope criticized the exploitation of mothers' material needs in such situations and asserted that a child should always be seen as a gift, not a subject of commercial agreements. He called for international efforts to universally ban this practice.

In June 2022, the Pope denounced surrogacy as an "inhuman" practice.
