Police Claim Ogun Finance Director Was Attacked and Killed by Insiders
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, has revealed that the individuals responsible for the murder of Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance in Governor Dapo Abiodun's office, are believed to be insiders.
As reported earlier, Oyekanmi was fatally shot on his way back from the bank, where he had overseen the withdrawal of cash for the state using a bullion truck.
Alamutu, in an interview with Punch Newspaper, asserted that the heist and murder were meticulously planned. He raised questions about how the armed criminals, armed with a sledgehammer, gained access to the bullion van.
According to Alamutu, the gunmen likely received information from an insider regarding the deceased's visit to the bank for cash withdrawals.
He stated, “From the information we have, it is obvious that it was premeditated. It was an in-house (thing). We have this feeling because, how did they know that they would need a hammer to break the receptacle?
“And they must have been lurking around the bank area, waiting for the man, or he must have been trailed to that area, and they must have had information that he was going to take a large amount of money from the bank. So, we are working on it.
“They (the armed robbers) came in a Toyota Corolla with a registration number yet unknown. They are about five, putting on hoods to conceal their identity. By God’s grace, we will do everything possible to ensure we get at them.”
The incident occurred when the deceased visited a branch of Fidelity Bank in Oke-Ilewo to withdraw N97.335 million and N15 million from Sterling Bank, also in Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta. The robbers intercepted the bullion van carrying N112.335 million on the Kuto overpass, breaking into it with a sledgehammer taken from their Toyota vehicle.
