A fire broke out at a spare parts market in Idumota, Lagos State, destroying property worth millions of naira.Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, stated on Saturday that the fire started on Friday night.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that a preliminary inquiry revealed that many buildings utilized as stores for the sale of car spare parts were destroyed.
The statement reads, "After receiving distress calls via the 767/112 Toll-Free Emergency Lines at 2220hrs, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency activated its Emergency Response Teams from Lekki, Cappa, and the Command and Control Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.
"When the LASEMA Response Teams arrived at the incident scene at 2255hrs, they observed that various buildings utilized as stores for the selling of car spare parts at the aforementioned area had been engulfed by fire.
"At the time of drafting this report, the immediate or remote causes of the fire occurrence remained unknown. However, the inferno damaged buildings and valuables valued at hundreds of millions of naira.
"The LASEMA Shark Response Team, LASEMA Fire Unit, and LASEMA Tiger Response Team collaborated with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service to put out the fire before it spread to neighboring structures.
"The law enforcement agencies present at the incident scene activated crowd measures to ensure all-round safety at the incident scene."
Oke-Osanyintolu further stated that there were no casualties or injuries reported at the scene of the incident.
He stated that "dampening down" has begun to extinguish the residual pockets of fire, and that the salvaging of precious properties in the recovered shops is proceeding.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that efforts to totally extinguish the fire are ongoing, as are recovery operations.
