Hackers steal $17m from Bank of Uganda accounts

Hackers broke into the Bank of Uganda's systems, stealing 62 billion shillings ($17 million), according to New Vision.

The incident was blamed on a Southeast Asian organization known as "Waste," according to the Kampala-based daily, which cited anonymous sources.

The bank recovered around 37 billion shillings of the stolen monies.

The police and the auditor general's office are looking into the breach, according to reports.

The Bank of Uganda has not yet commented on the matter.

The Daily Monitor said that the total amount stolen was 47.8 billion shillings.

The monies were transferred in September to two accounts in Japan and the United Kingdom.

The crime is thought to be a "inside job," with many staff from the central bank and the finance ministry under investigation.
