Nigerian Union of Teachers(NUT) Honors ABI LGA chairman Egbala Bassey

On April 3, 2025, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Abi Branch, led by its Chairman, Comr. Bassey Echeng Nkanu paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Egbala Bassey, Executive Chairman of Abi Local Government Area (LGA), to commend his outstanding leadership and present him with the prestigious Award of Excellence in Governance, Community, and Educational Development. 

During the visit, the NUT team conveyed its heartfelt thanks for Hon. Egbala Bassey's continuous commitment to good governance, peace-building, and infrastructure development in many areas of local government. He also stated that his leadership has played an important role in creating unity, inclusivity, and long-term progress within Abi LGA. Recognising the critical role of education in community development, the delegation identified important areas that require deliberate intervention to improve the effectiveness of schools in the LGA.

These requests included:
  • 1. Provide essential school records, such as diaries, registers, textbooks, and workbooks, to assist accurate documentation, lesson planning, and student assessment.
  • 2. Provide chalkboards/markerboards to ensure effective teaching and learning by addressing a shortage of critical teaching tools.
  • 3. Organise annual sporting events by implementing structured football and track-and-field tournaments to promote student discipline, teamwork, and talent discovery.
  • 4. Purchase of a motorbike for the NUT Exco to alleviate mobility issues and boost outreach, coordination and response to teacher concerns in Abi LGA.

Hon. Egbala Bassey responded by reaffirming his administration's commitment to education as a cornerstone of sustainable development. He pledged to the NUT leadership that he will address their issues and enact plans to improve Abi's educational sector. The NUT Chairman, Comr. Bassey Echeng Nkanu, spoke on behalf of all teachers in Abi LGA, praising the Chairman's innovative leadership and emphasising how his proactive administration has considerably enhanced the welfare of teachers, students, and the overall educational system.

He also urged continued support for policies that prioritise educational development. Other Council members present included the Secretary of Council, Dr. Jeremiah Ani, the Supervisor for Education, Hon. Wilfred Inah, and Mrs. Eke E. Ani, the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), ABI LGA.

In conclusion, the Chairperson stated that the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Abi Branch, remains committed to creating a positive learning environment and will continue to work with stakeholders to advance the educational sector in Abi LGA.
