FG sets April dates for CNG rollout
The federal government has set key dates for the deployment of its Compressed Natural Gas Initiative in April 2025, signalling significant progress in the country's transition to cleaner energy.According to Kenechukwu Chukwu, Technical Assistant on Stakeholder Management and Public Engagement for the Presidential CNG Initiative, the activation of CNG distribution and refuelling stations is scheduled for April 25, 2025. The stations will open in six critical locations: Enugu, the Federal Capital Territory, Lokoja (Kogi State), Port Harcourt (Rivers State), Ado Ekiti (Ekiti State), and Abia State.
In a related event, on April 15, the Federal Ministry of Youths will launch the first phase of the CNG tricycle deployment program, a significant milestone in the overall CNG rollout strategy.
As part of its attempts to increase CNG availability, particularly in Northern Nigeria, the government plans to sign a $6 million investment deal with Arete for a Mini-LNG Project on April 4. On that day, the president will also hold a news briefing to provide updates on the initiative's development.
Further operations include a significant agreement reached on April 11 between the PCNGI and public sector unions to provide CNG conversions to 200,000 public sector personnel.
The Nigerian Army will formally receive CNG-powered buses on May 5. Training for Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police troops will begin on May 19.
The statement further stated that the government will implement the autogas framework in May in partnership with the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria and the Nigerian Gas Marketing Limited to ensure a continuous and affordable supply of CNG to the auto industry.
