Fubara claims that the majority of Wike's projects were executed with borrowed funds
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has revealed that several projects initiated under the administration of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, remain partially unpaid for, accumulating substantial debts. Fubara made this revelation during the inauguration of the 10.98km Aleto-Ogale-Ebubu-Eteo Road, also known as Old Bori Road, in Eleme Local Government Area. He highlighted that many contractors who executed projects during Wike's tenure are now seeking payment for outstanding balances. Fubara emphasized the completion of the aforementioned road, originally unfinished, under his administration. He specified that the contract for this project was awarded to CCECC on August 14, 2023, during his tenure.
"We allocated N6.7 billion for this project, and I am proud to announce that every penny has been disbursed. We've settled the contractor in full, leaving no outstanding balance. Our primary challenge as an administration is debt.
"The truth is, many projects initiated by the previous administration still have unsettled balances owed to contractors, amounting to millions and billions. I've refrained from discussing this issue because I was part of that system. However, if pressed, I won't hesitate to speak out. Let's put that aside for now; when they're ready, we'll address it. Our current endeavors have already garnered attention; I can only imagine the reaction when we tackle larger projects."
The governor also stated his intention to present a 'white paper' detailing the project's funding during its inauguration. "As we move forward, we will prepare a comprehensive white paper documenting the project's history and awarded amounts," he affirmed.
Fubara clarified that his administration has not engaged in conflicts with the Federal Government, asserting that they have received support despite facing challenges arising from internal factors.
"I've heard claims that we've been at odds with the Federal Government. However, our situation differs. We have not faced obstruction from the FG; rather, our challenges stem from internal issues," he explained.
"If there were conflicts with the FG, that would be another matter. We're receiving support from the FG, yet there's a saboteur within. It's a peculiar situation, but we've taken decisive action against this saboteur," he confidently declared.
Fubara justified inviting Otti to the commissioning event, emphasizing a commitment to collaborating with progressive leaders.
"I'm not one to mince words, but let me tell you, a storm is brewing on the internet. You might be wondering why I invited the Abia State Governor. It's because he's not just about talk; he's a man of action and integrity," he concluded.
In his remarks, Otti praised Fubara for his commendable work in Rivers State, lauding his leadership style as exemplary. Otti emphasized that true leadership entails serving the people, not just a select few interests.
Having previously served under the administrations of Peter Odili and Rotimi Amaechi, Otti expressed confidence in Fubara's preparedness for governance. He asserted that Fubara remains focused and undeterred by the political challenges facing Rivers State.
