Why Finidi Was Appointed Super Eagles Coach – NFF
The Nigeria Football Federation has revealed that Finidi George's outstanding coaching record played a significant role in his appointment as the new Super Eagles manager.
After leading Nigeria in two international friendlies in March, the NFF officially appointed Finidi as the permanent coach of the team.
He was selected ahead of his compatriot Emmanuel Amuneke and other contenders.
Discussing what made the former Ajax winger stand out, NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, noted that his experience as an assistant coach to Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro was a key factor.
"I'm not part of the Technical Committee, but I can see many positives in Finidi George," Olajire
"Finidi George was not only an outstanding football player, but he has also equipped himself remarkably well and has gained significant recognition in his relatively short coaching career.
"As for the Super Eagles, his role as an assistant to Jose Peseiro gives him a head start over anyone else. He worked closely with the team, was there when they qualified for the AFCON, and was with them when they secured second place at the tournament."
"It's only natural that someone of this caliber, who has achieved so much and has been so closely involved with the team, gets the nod, especially considering we have just five weeks before some crucial matches," Olajire said.
He also praised Finidi's decision to return to Nigeria and start his coaching career with the Aba Elephants.
"He had the option to stay in Spain and take a job with a second-tier club, but he chose to return to Nigeria and begin with an NPFL team.
"He started with Enyimba, and in his second season, he won the league title. Winning a league title isn't easy, so he deserves credit for that. Looking at the standings now, this is his third season with the team, and with four matches remaining, he's on track to retain the title.
"That's no small accomplishment, showing he's a man who knows what he's doing," he said.
With less than five weeks to go before the crucial World Cup qualifying fixtures against South Africa, Finidi is expected to get the team on track after the initial draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
