Taiwo Awoniyi Nominated for Premier League Player of the Month for August
Nigerian forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, finds himself among five other players nominated for the August Premier League Player of the Month award.
Awoniyi, currently 25 years old, has impressively netted three goals in just four games, amassing a total of 184 minutes of playtime. This extends his remarkable goal-scoring streak from the previous season to seven consecutive Premier League matches. He becomes only the third African player to achieve such a feat in the Premier League, joining the ranks of Mohammed Salah and Sheyi Adebayor.
Competing with Awoniyi for the award are Jarod Bowen from West Ham, James Maddison from Tottenham Hotspur, Rodri from Manchester City, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, and Kaoru Mitoma from Brighton.
Both Awoniyi and Bryan Mbeumo have scored the same number of Premier League goals this season. Mbeumo has been crucial for the unbeaten Brentford side, filling in admirably for the suspended Ivan Toney and scoring three goals in August with just seven shots.
Bowen and Rodri have both notched two goals, while Maddison and Mitoma each have one goal and two assists to their name.
Taiwo Awoniyi is anticipated to feature in Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier scheduled for Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, with kickoff at 5 p.m. WAT.
