Super Eagles climb 14 spots, securing the 28th position in the latest FIFA ranking
In the recent FIFA men's ranking released on Thursday, the Super Eagles surged by 14 positions. The Nigerian national team ascended from 42nd to 28th place globally, marking a notable improvement.
According to the World Football governing body, the updated rankings also reflect the Super Eagles' advancement from sixth to third place in Africa.
This elevation on the global list represents the national team's highest ranking since May 2013.
The significant rise can be attributed to the Eagles' performance at the recently concluded African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, where they secured the second position and earned the silver medal.
Despite maintaining an undefeated streak throughout the competition, the Eagles faced a 2-1 defeat against Cote d’Ivoire in the final.
Cote d’Ivoire advanced from the 49th to the 39th position globally, while Morocco and Senegal retained their positions as the top African teams.
Argentina continues to hold the top spot globally in the latest rankings, with France and Brazil maintaining their positions in second and third place.
The FIFA Men’s World Ranking, established by football's world governing body for men’s national teams in association football, evaluates teams based on their game performances. The most successful teams secure higher rankings.
Teams earn points based on the outcomes of all FIFA-recognized full international matches using the points system.
The upcoming FIFA world ranking is scheduled for release on April 4, 2024.
