Shorunmu asserts that witnessing more away victories in the NPFL will contribute to its growth
Former international goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu emphasized that an upsurge in away victories during the 2023–2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season will positively impact the development of the top tier of the country’s football league. Shorunmu, who served as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Super Eagles in the 1990s, shared this perspective in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.
He credited the league's current development to the commitment of the League Management Company (LMC) working in collaboration with GTI Asset Management Company, the league's sponsors.
"These days, predicting match outcomes is unpredictable. The conventional factors of home or away advantage no longer dictate results, thanks to the increased vigilance of our referees.
"This shift from the norm signifies a positive change, and I am optimistic that our league will thrive as a result. It reflects the essential components of a well-functioning league.
"The timely payment of referees' indemnities has played a crucial role in achieving this. Credit goes to the league leadership and sponsors for their unwavering dedication to the league," he remarked.
He anticipates that the NPFL will soon evolve into a hotspot for international scouts seeking to recruit talented players.
"Our league is a dynamic work in progress that will soon capture the attention of international scouts," he added.
Regarding the absence of domestic league players in the Super Eagles squad at the ongoing 2023 Nations Cup, he chose not to comment, stating, "I prefer not to express my opinion on that matter. I wish the Super Eagles the best."
