Sanwo-Olu expresses deep sorrow over Nigeria's loss to Ivory Coast

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, characterized Nigeria's 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday as a "very lamentable defeat." Sanwo-Olu encouraged the Super Eagles to regroup and move forward. In a set of tweets from his official account on Monday, he also extended congratulations to William Troost-Ekong for being named the Player of the Tournament.

"The Super Eagles experienced a deeply saddening defeat. Throughout the tournament, they exhibited utmost dedication, but ultimately, the outcome hinged on narrow margins," the governor expressed in a tweet.

"Throughout the tournament, we united thousands of people at 25 viewing centers to relish the joy of football as our team shouldered the aspirations of the nation.

"Whether in triumph or defeat, this team has brought honor to us, and we will cherish this AFCON as a unifying force that brought us all together.

"Heartfelt congratulations to William Troost-Ekong on being honored as the AFCON Player of the Tournament."

Hats off to William Troost-Ekong for earning the title of AFCON Player of the Tournament.

"Kudos to our champions; now, let's regroup and aim for success once more."

Ivory Coast secured their third AFCON trophy with goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller, overshadowing William Troost-Ekong's goal for Jose Peseiro's team.
