Plumptre sad, disappointed to miss Olympics

Ashleigh Plumptre, a defender for the Super Falcons, has voiced her sadness at being unable to fully recover from an injury, which has resulted in her being unable to participate in the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Plumptre had an injury in March and was compelled to be absent from Nigeria's previous set of qualifiers against South Africa.

The ex-Leicester City star has not appeared for the Falcons since her remarkable display at the 2023 World Cup, which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The adaptable defender was first summoned by Randy Waldrum for the match against the Banyana Banyana but declined the invitation due to sustaining an injury while playing for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

The Super Falcons, in the absence of their key player, successfully won their place in the Olympics by defeating South Africa 1-0 in Abuja and managing to hold them to a goalless draw in Pretoria.

In June, Plumptre utilized her social media platforms to share films documenting her recuperation from the injury, with the aim of making a timely comeback prior to the Olympic Games in Paris.

The 26-year-old individual posted videos of a training session with fitness and rehabilitation instructor Warren Williams on her Instagram feed.

Regrettably, the defender was unable to fully recuperate within the allotted timeframe and so was not included on Waldrum's list, which was unveiled on Thursday for the prominent event.

Plumptre once again penned a message on her Facebook, articulating her profound sorrow and disillusionment at having being unable to participate in the Olympics.

"The timing has not coincided with the opportunity to be considered for the Olympic roster - a long-held aspiration of mine," she expressed.

"Following my surgery, I have made efforts in all aspects of my life to optimize my chances of recovery. One valuable lesson I have acquired is the skill of attentively heeding the signals my body sends."

Although I am disappointed to not be able to attend personally, I am really excited and proud to know that I will be able to witness the Super Falcons girls represent our country on the Olympic stage.

"Farewell, young ladies!" "Naija to the world!"

Since relocating to Saudi Arabia last summer following Nigeria's elimination in the round of sixteen of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, the Nigerian player, who was born in England, has been performing exceptionally well. Nigeria lost to the three Lionesses in a penalty shootout.

Plumptre has proven to be a valuable asset to Al-Ittihad this season, as she has excelled both as a central defender and as a full-back. Additionally, she has scored a total of six goals.
