Peseiro Rejects Contract Renewal, Expects Osimhen to Trouble Cameroon
Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peseiro, has declined a contract extension from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), preferring to wait until after the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory against Guinea Bissau on Monday, advancing to the next round where they will face Cameroon on Saturday. NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, had earlier stated that Peseiro's future with the team would be decided after the AFCON, contingent on meeting specific conditions for a new contract.
Peseiro, speaking to SportTv+, emphasized that numerous inaccurate reports about his tenure in Nigeria have been exploited by the European media to create a false narrative. He acknowledged facing challenges but chose not to disclose them. Despite receiving a contract renewal proposal, he declined, stating,
"I have a contract until the end of the AFCON, they already proposed renewal, but I didn’t want it." Peseiro's existing contract, signed in September with a reduced salary, concludes after the AFCON. Additionally, he expressed confidence in Victor Osimhen's ability to impact the upcoming match against Cameroon.
Criticism has been directed at Osimhen for not capitalizing on scoring opportunities during Nigeria's three group-stage games at the current AFCON. However, Peseiro assured Nigerians that the Napoli star would bounce back on Saturday, emphasizing Osimhen's importance to the team. Peseiro expressed confidence that Osimhen, the top scorer, will find success in the upcoming match, highlighting the challenging nature of the tournament and tough competition. He praised Osimhen's contributions in creating chances and scoring against Equatorial Guinea, noting that despite sharing points, the team aims for victory in the next encounter.
