Oyo SWAN Unveils Priorities for the New Sports Commissioner

Oyo SWAN Outlines Priorities for Newly Appointed Sports Commissioner

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Oyo State has outlined key priorities for the recently appointed Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Wasilat Adefemi Adegoke. Wasilat Adegoke, a 29-year-old, assumed office on Thursday following her swearing-in by Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.

In a congratulatory message issued by the association's Secretary, Adewale Tijani, Oyo SWAN encouraged the new Commissioner to prioritize the development of grassroots sports. The association, led by Chairman Niyi Alebiosu, emphasized the significance of grassroots sports as the foundation for sporting advancement at both state and national levels.

The Chairman of the State SWAN, Alebiosu, stressed the importance of focusing on the revival of grassroots sports, particularly school games. He emphasized that school games play a crucial role in discovering talents and nurturing future sports stars for both the state and the nation. Alebiosu cited examples of current Nigerian sports stars like Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, and Akinkunmi Amoo, who all emerged from school games.

Furthermore, he urged Adegoke to actively engage in youth empowerment programs. Alebiosu assured the new Commissioner that sports journalists in the state would collaborate with her to help achieve her set objectives.

Wasilat Adegoke, born in June 1994, is a native of Lanlate in Ibarapa East Local Government area of the state. She obtained her degree from the Department of Statistics at The Polytechnic Ibadan. Despite her young age, Miss Adegoke has been actively involved in grassroots politics and held the position of State PDP Ex-officio from 2018 to 2021.

She played a pivotal role in securing Governor Seyi Makinde's administration in 2019 and his successful re-election in 2023 by mobilizing grassroots support for the Governor in both elections.

The new Commissioner, a native of Lanlate, takes over from Asiwaju Seun Fakorede, who also hailed from the Ibarapa Zone.
