Nigeria maintains its 40th position in the most recent FIFA world rankings
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have maintained their 40th position in the most recent FIFA world rankings, as announced by the Fédération of Internationale Football Association (FIFA) on October 26, 2023.
Nigeria had previously slipped from 39th to 40th in the FIFA world rankings released on September 21, despite a convincing 6-0 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe in the final 2023 AFCON qualifier.
In the latest world rankings, the team has retained their 40th position. These rankings were published on FIFA's website following a 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia and a 3-2 victory over Mozambique during the last international break.
In Africa, the Super Eagles' ranking remains unchanged at number six. FIFA 2022 World Cup semi-finalist Morocco leads the way as the top-ranked African team, followed by the African Cup of Nations champions, Senegal, in second place.
Tunisia holds the third position, Algeria is fourth, and Egypt occupies the fifth spot on the continent.
In Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Lesotho, who will face the Super Eagles, experienced a drop in their ranking from 151 to 153. South Africa, another team in the same group, slipped from 63 to 64, while Zimbabwe retained their 125th position.
Nigeria's other World Cup qualifying group opponents, Benin Republic, have maintained their 93rd position, while Rwanda saw a slight drop from 139 to 140 in the rankings.
The top ten rankings remain unchanged and consist solely of European and South American teams. Argentina, the winners of the FIFA 2022 World Cup, hold the top spot, with France in second and Brazil in third place. The Three Lions of England occupy fourth place, and Belgium rounds out the top five.
The next FIFA/Coca-Cola world ranking will be published by FIFA on November 30, 2023.
