In the AFCON, Onuachu steps in for the injured Sadiq Umar
In the 2023 African Cup of Nations, Sadiq Umar, another striker for the Super Eagles, has been sidelined due to injury and will be succeeded by Paul Onuachu.
This development follows the earlier exclusion of striker Victor Boniface from the competition, as reported (https://punchng.com/injury-rules-out-boniface-from-afcon/). The tournament is scheduled to commence tomorrow, January 13, in Ivory Coast.
The 26-year-old Umar sustained a knee injury during Nigeria's 2-0 friendly defeat to the Syli Stars of Guinea on Monday. However, as indicated in a statement released on Friday via the official Super Eagles account, Paul Onuachu has been named as the replacement for Sadiq Umar.
"Sadiq Umar has been sidelined from the AFCON 2023 squad due to injury, and in his place, Paul Onuachu will step in.
Onuachu had previously participated in the AFCON 2019 finals held in Egypt.
Unfortunately, the 29-year-old missed the preceding competition in Cameroon due to injury."
In the current season, Onuachu has recorded nine goals and three assists in 15 matches for Trabzonspor.
