Finidi predicts tough Enyimba clash

Finidi George, Rivers United's coach, expects a tough test against his former club Enyimba in one of the high-profile 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League match-day four games on Saturday.

The highly anticipated clash is a South-South derby, but the stakes have been raised once more as Finidi will face his former assistant coach, Yemi Olanrewaju, in what has been dubbed "master vs. apprentice."

Both teams have not lost a game this season, and Finidi anticipates a difficult first meeting with his former employers. "We're playing against Enyimba; it'll be a difficult game, but I've always said we'll take each game as it comes," Finidi said following their 1-0 victory over Nasarawa United last week.

When Finidi was announced as Enyimba's coach in September 2022, he handpicked Olarenwaju as his assistant, and together they led the Aba giants to a record-extending ninth Nigeria Premier League title in 2023.

Finidi left Enyimba to take over the ill-fated Super Eagles job in April, and Olarenwaju was appointed interim head coach until the end of the season before being confirmed as the People's Elephants' permanent head coach in August.

Rivers United has seven points after three games under Finidi, four of which came on the road, while Olanrewaju has led Enyimba to two wins in two matches, including an away win over Heartland.

The young coach also led them to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup last weekend.
