Enyeama is considering joining the Eagles
Ex-Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama, has left a suggestive message on Instagram, implying that he might join the national team's technical staff when the camp opens on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Enyeama shared this on Monday in response to a post regarding the team's AFCON preparations on the official Instagram account of the Super Eagles. The team is set to commence a one-week training camp starting on Tuesday, lasting until January 9.
He wrote, "Let's go, See you in camp. Time for business."
Enyeama now joins the ranks of former Super Eagles goalkeepers Alloy Agu and Ike Shorunmu, who have been appointed as goalkeeper trainers for the national team. This appointment follows Enyeama's revelation two months ago about the mistreatment he endured from the Nigeria Football Federation, ultimately resulting in his retirement from the team. The former Lille goalkeeper expressed deep hurt over the treatment he received but has since moved on without harboring any grudges.
In an interview with HotSports, Enyeama stated, "Honestly, I haven't been keeping up with Nigerian football since the day I departed. With all due respect, I felt like I was treated as if I were a disposable item, so I erected a barrier between myself and the national team."
"It is only now that I am starting to follow current developments, but I have refrained from watching football or the national team. I was deeply hurt, but now I am truly at peace. I have moved on, turned the page.
"I can't speak much about the national team, goalkeeping, and all of that because I am not watching them."
Enyeama made his debut for the Eagles in May 2002, accumulating 101 appearances for the national team and securing victory in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa. The 41-year-old is Nigeria’s most successful goalkeeper, having participated in five Nations Cup tournaments (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2013) and featuring in the Nigeria squad at the 2002, 2010, and 2014 World Cup tournaments.
The Eagles, led by Enyeama in goal, clinched their last AFCON title – their third – 11 years ago in South Africa, triumphing over Burkina Faso with a solitary goal in the final.
He retired from the national team in 2015 following a dispute with former coach Sunday Oliseh.
In pursuit of a fourth continental title, the Eagles will face Equatorial Guinea on January 14 in their Group A opener, followed by matches against host nation Ivory Coast four days later. Their final Group A encounter is against Guinea Bissau on January 22.
Nigeria, making their 20th appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations, secured championships as hosts in 1980, emerged triumphant in Tunisia in 1994, and were crowned winners in South Africa in 2013.
