AFCON 2023: South Africa's Hugo Broos addresses loss to Nigeria

South Africa's manager, Hugo Broos, is of the opinion that his team outperformed Nigeria and deserved victory in Wednesday’s AFCON 2023 semi-final clash. Despite a captivating performance by Broos' team, the Super Eagles secured a place in the final after a thrilling penalty shootout.

Broos expressed his frustration, stating, “Football can be hard sometimes, when you see the performance of my team today, and then there is penalties, and then you lose the penalties and you are not in the finals, it’s hard to accept that because we played a very good game today.”

Nigeria emerged triumphant with a 4-2 victory in the penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time. The Super Eagles scored first in the 67th minute through captain William Troost-Ekong, but Teboho Mokoena equalized for South Africa in the 90th minute.

Despite South Africa's impressive showing, Broos insisted that his team played exceptionally well throughout the tournament and believed they deserved to reach the final. He expressed pride in his players and lamented the disappointment of falling short of the ultimate goal.

While Nigeria advances to the final against Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa will compete in the third-place playoff against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
