More time is required by Tinubu to execute economic reforms, says Minister
According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, President Bola Tinubu requires additional time to carry out economic reforms aimed at fostering the country's growth.
The minister supported Tinubu's extended plans for the country, emphasizing their importance for national development.
Malagi encouraged Nigerians to exhibit patience regarding the reforms, emphasizing that the benefits of the long-term plan require time to materialize. He highlighted that it's premature to assess the president's performance within the first seven months, underscoring Tinubu's clear vision of leading Nigeria towards the envisioned prosperity.
The minister stated, "It's important to recall that the President has only been in office for seven months. I won't make excuses, but seven months is indeed a brief period."
"For a comprehensive long-term plan, it requires a considerable amount of time to establish foundational structures. Along the journey, there may be shocks, turbulence, and occasional disruptions. However, the president's vision is crystal clear: he is committed to leading Nigeria towards the envisioned prosperity.
"He dedicates his time day and night to achieve this goal. Every day, ministers and everyone else diligently work in that direction, even though tangible results may not be immediately apparent. We implore Nigerians to exercise a bit more patience.
"We understand the challenges, particularly with the difficulty in purchasing food items due to these policies, but the government is actively working to address them.
"As a reminder, President Tinubu, in his inaugural address on May 29, 2023, declared an end to the subsidy era."
Tinubu explained that the discontinuation of the fuel subsidy was necessary as the country couldn't sustain it.
The president emphasized that the annual expenditure of trillions of naira to uphold the subsidy would be redirected to enhance sectors such as healthcare, transportation, education, housing, and national security, among others.
