Governor Yahaya assures Nigerians of imminent benefits following the removal of subsidies

Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State announced on Tuesday that the removal of fuel subsidies would soon bring positive outcomes for Nigerians. He made this statement in Gombe during the inauguration of the second phase of the state's palliative distribution to its residents.

He mentioned that President Bola Tinubu, in conjunction with state governors, was actively working to alleviate the challenges arising from the removal of the petrol subsidy, aiming for a resolution to the difficulties faced by the public.

He mentioned that considerable investments were being made to alleviate the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

"It is our hope that, by the grace of God and with the commitment of Mr. President and governors, we will overcome this hardship. We are working diligently to swiftly address the challenges resulting from the removal of the subsidy.

The primary cause of this hardship is the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy. However, as of today, the Port Harcourt refinery is resuming production. Soon, locally refined petroleum products will reach the people, and there is no reason why these locally made products should cost as much as they currently do," he stated.

The governor praised the patience of residents in the state and across Nigeria since the subsidy removal, assuring them of better times ahead. Regarding the palliative distribution, Yahaya explained that it was intended for the poor and vulnerable in the 2,988 polling units in the state.

He mentioned that an estimated 30 individuals per polling unit were anticipated to receive benefits. Altogether, approximately 90,000 people would benefit from this initiative.

He urged the committee overseeing the distribution to guarantee that the food items reached those who are in need and vulnerable.

He mentioned that this palliative effort would supplement the initial phase, where 420,000 individuals benefited in August 2023.

It is worth noting that following the event and the departure of the governor and other top government officials, certain suspected individuals forcibly took away some of the food items. The security personnel present at the venue found it challenging to handle the large number of thugs who seized bags of rice from some of the intended beneficiaries.
