Woman reportedly scalded with hot water by the landlady, seeks assistance

Imabong William, a woman in her middle age residing in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, is reaching out to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and others for assistance to save her life.

William, originally from Akwa Ibom State, has been undergoing treatment at Zion Hospital, Nawfia, in Njikoka LGA, since August 17. This follows an incident where her landlady, Amaka Okonkwo, allegedly poured a mixture of hot water and pepper on her during a disagreement over a rent increase.

The occurrence took place in Enugwu-Ukwu, and the landlady, Amaka Okonkwo, is presently in police custody regarding the incident.

In a statement to journalists on Saturday, William expressed that she still experiences pain from scald burns, as the hospital discontinued her medication for over a month due to her accumulating medical bills.

She mentioned that her outstanding bill at the hospital amounts to N650,000, a sum she is unable to cover.

She explained, “I've been in the hospital for over three months, and while I am slowly recovering, I still experience pain. The doctor presented my bill last month, and it has now reached N650,000.

“As a trader, I don't have the financial means to settle the bill, which is why the hospital has discontinued providing me with medications and treatment.”

I contacted the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare since they were the ones who brought me to the hospital, but they have not visited to check on me since then.

"The woman who answered the call from the Ministry informed me that they do not cover medical bills and their responsibility is to prosecute the offender. She advised me to seek funds independently.

I am truly bewildered. Even affording meals has become challenging, and I am concerned about the well-being of my two-year-old baby who is with me in the hospital, as there is a risk of contracting diseases here.

William, however, is reaching out to the state governor, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, his wife, Dr. Nonye Soludo, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, and compassionate individuals to come to her assistance.

“I implore Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Dr. Nonye Soludo, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, and kind-hearted individuals to extend their support.

"Many have suggested I approach the governor's wife. Some advised writing, but the truth is, I am facing immense difficulty.

"Any assistance the government can provide to enhance my situation is welcome; my health and life depend on it," she expressed.

An unnamed hospital staff informed journalists that they transferred her from the private ward, where she received treatment, to a maternity ward. They decided to cease her medication to prevent further accumulation of her medical expenses.
